One of the many reasons I love competitive shooting and want to share it with everyone I know is because it’s a constant learning environment. Every match shows me how much more I can improve my skills behind the gun.
While I can work to perfect many skills on my own both in dry fire and live fire, having training partners and instructors are an important part of making learning efficient. They help push me beyond my comfort zone so that I don’t simply polish what I’m good at but tackle what’s difficult, and they can help identify problem areas and offer solutions to fix them.
That’s why even though I’ve been shooting for almost ten years, I still make a point of taking formal training classes on a regular basis. Some of the classes I take are geared towards defensive skills and others are more specifically geared towards marksmanship or competition skills. I believe there’s always more to learn.
For the first class on my schedule this year, I took Advanced Competition Pistol with Bruce Gray from Operation Specific Training. From a technical perspective, I learned – or was reminded a lot about – how to run a trigger and make good hits. However, I learned even more about the mental state and mind games that allow shooters to fully exploit all of the skills they have already mastered.
