The 2016 USPSA Area 1 Championship was held at the Lee Kay Center shooting range in Salt Lake City Utah from May 11 – 15. During this first major match of the year, Yong Lee finished 2nd overall, and 1st in the Law Enforcement Production divisions. Both Lee and team member Mike Vosen shot in the division with their Grayguns-tuned SIG SAUER P320F-9 handguns.
This year, 380 competitors shot the 16, 340 minimum round count, two-day shooting format event. There were 71 shooters in the Production division. When asked about the difficulty of this year’s Area 1 Championship, Lee noted, “The difficulty level of the stages appeared to be fairly average. However, there were many hard cover and no-shoot targets placed strategically around wobbling bridges, awkward positions, and around tough barricade positions. There were also fast swingers, which were extremely difficult to time.”
Mike Vosen’s trip to Salt Lake City was his first USPSA Level 3 match. “I was quite nervous for several weeks leading up to it,” Vosen said. “Once I got there, I walked through the stages with Yong giving me pointers on some of the different options to shoot each stage and why certain ones were more efficient.”
One of the great things about getting involved in competitive shooting, is that you can be squadded with some of the best Master and Grandmaster-level shooters in the country. Then again, squadding with some of the best can be a bit of a distraction. “One of the challenges was to not be lured into keeping up with the shooting speed of the top Limited and Open division shooters,” Lee noted. “When you’re shooting Production, you’re limited to 10-round magazines and scored differently. It’s great to watch and learn from shooters in other divisions, but you need to stay focused with a plan for your division.”
