Lampignano at Keystone CupTeam SIG shooter Daniel Lampignano headed to Pennsylvania for a couple of NRA Action Pistol events at the Keystone Cup. Here, he writes about his experience.

I attended the matches in Chambersburg, Pa. for the first time as part of my expanding involvement in NRA Action Pistol. This friendly locale, beautifully situated on a range dedicated solely to the discipline, put me in the right frame of mind. Becoming so wrapped up in the outcomes of my performance, and needing to step back and reset, I approached this match with incredibly simple goals:

  1. Stop making that “I might not make it to the bathroom” face as I draw, and …
  2. Stop judging my performance as I shoot.

Both goals were aimed at having a real impact on my performance. Despite the SIG SAUER P320’s exceptional trigger I was still dropping my first shots – an effect of trying too hard, feeling that everything was riding on the moment that first shot would break. This is what NRA Action Pistol does to the shooter – knowing that there are no make up shots one bears down with the utmost intention, willing the shot to be perfect. The result runs quite contrary, and points fall out as fast as you can yank the trigger. I was able to be less willful, not only allowing those first shots to find the black more often, but also allowing myself to have more fun.

The Keystone Cup

The Keystone Cup, the State match on Sunday, introduced two new events I’d not shot: Los Alamitos and the Crawford Barricade. Los Alamitos blends a bit of USPSA with NRA AP with tighter time constraints, closer shots and reloads. Shooting it for the first time I felt it a return to the familiar and walked away with a smile. The grin was only broadened by the modified Barricade event, which required addressing the targets from both sides within the same string. While one might think the time constraints would be difficult when in reality I was able to select a pace that worked for both sides, spending more time on the left than the right. Again, it was fun and I look forward to shooting it next time.

SIG and Team SIG enthusiasts were quick to say hi, telling me how much they like their P938 as much as they wanted to pass their on regards to Annette Evans and A.J. Stuart.

A big thanks goes out to George Martin and his crew. Couldn’t have asked for more. I’ll be back next year.

Editor’s Note: Lampignano finished 2nd in Production at the Regional event on July 16, and 1st Sharpshooter in Production on July 17.
