At the 2016 USPSA Area 3 Championship in Nebraska, Team SIG’s Tim Herron won the High Overall Single Stack and the Area 3 Single Stack division title with his SIG SAUER® Max 1911. Herron took the win by about 100 points (5 percent), in the 14 stage, 400 round match.
Team SIG Captain Max Michel took the win in the new USPSA Carry Optics division shooting his SIG P320, finishing 7th overall.
More than 380 competitors attended Area 3, known for incorporating lots of props, activators, moving targets and carnival-style stages. Tim tells us a bit about his experience at the match, and we’ve included video from a couple of the Area 3 stages.
2016 Area 3 Review
The Area 3 Championship was a fun, two day match that was pretty difficult for Single Stack shooters. Add in stages requiring holding an item, opening doors, pulling ropes, untraditional shooting positions and a bit of running, and I’d put the weekend into the “grueling” category.
The high round count means long stages with lots of fast reloads, creative stage planning and being very accurate. To be a competitive Single Stack shooter, you really need to make all your shots and reload efficiently on the move since standing reloads wastes time. I shot a good, yet conservative match. Disaster factor is high at this match where one mistake can really hurt in the standings. I won seven of 14 stages and was top five on all but one other stage. This all led to topping the field and winning the High Overall in Single Stack as well as taking home the title of Area 3 Single Stack Champion!
My SIG SAUER MAX 1911 .45 ran fantastic all weekend and the SIG V-Crown in .45 ACP never disappoints. It’s been extremely accurate and dependable since I started using the round.
Even though rain delayed the match on Saturday morning, the match staff did a terrific job ensuring everything ran smoothly so we would finish up on time.
Special thanks to all of my sponsors including – but certainly not limited to – SIG SAUER, Lucas Oil, Blade-Tech and ESS. The gear combination I’m fortunate to be using this year certainly was the winning combination for the weekend.
