When we first started competing action pistol events, almost everyone reaches out to established competition shooters in regards to equipment. As a new Production Division shooter, Blade-Tech seemed to be the go-to company for a quality, level one retention holster. Eight years later I’m still competing – and now sponsored by – Blade-Tech Industries. So when I decided to try my hand at multi-gun competition, it seemed rather obvious where I would look first.
Competitors look for a retention holster that is easy to use, dependable and tough. I heard quite a few stories about shooters being disqualified when their pistols fell out of their holster while moving quickly, and I wanted to avoid that issue. The Blade-Tech WRS Level II Duty Holster was a product I saw at SHOT 2016 and met my requirements. I ordered one and mounted it to my Competition Speed Belt.
The quality of the materials used for the WRS was something I noticed right away. The holster finish was free of any blemishes or unfinished edges. The material is Blade-Tech’s own, proprietary blend of Boltaron™ that is thick and inspires confidence in the strength of the holster.
Retention Holster Design
The WRS utilizes two levels of retention. Basic friction takes care of the first level of holster retention. This is adjustable by loosening or tightening two Philips-head screws. A spring-loaded hood ensures the second level of retention, where the traditional thumb-break design moves the hood forward. Activating the release is very simple and became second nature after some practice. To re-engage the level two security, all the user has to do is rotate the hood to the upright position. The hood locks in with an audible and tactile click.
Having the ability to optionally engage the second level of retention with the WRS is a clear advantage for 3-gun shooters. If you have a course of fire that begins with pistol, you can start with level one retention, and holster up and flip the hood when moving to the rifle or shotgun.
The WRS comes with the standard duty dropped and offset belt attachment. The holster comes with a three position adjustable cant and is available with a variety of mounting options. Finally, Blade-Tech uses thread locker on all the hardware on their duty holster line. (You can request the thread locker not be applied by Blade-Tech if you have special plans in mind.)
The holster has quickly become one of my favorites. It is rock solid and very versatile, and I’ll be using the WRS at the Texas Law Enforcement Multi Gun Championship later this year.
